Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
High blood pressure and heart failure Quinapril Accupril

Uses
Accupril (Quinapril) has two primary functions, which are treating hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. When taken, this drug inhibits the action of a certain enzyme (referred to as ACE by doctors). This enzyme is responsible for producing compounds that tighten and constrict the blood vessels, which leads to high blood pressure. Blocking it allows the vessels to widen, thereby leading to a drop in blood pressure, as well as a reduction of heart failure symptoms.

Dosage and Administration
Accupril (Quinapril) tablets are swallowed with a glass of water. A visit to the doctor is necessary, so that the proper dosage can be prescribed. All instructions given by your doctor must be followed. For congestive heart failure treatment, the most commonly prescribed dosage is 5mg taken twice per day. The maintenance dose is 10mg to 20mg per day. However, high blood pressure requires a different dosage. Patients are generally directed to take 10mg per day, and the maintenance dosage is 20mg to 80mg per day, divided into 1 or 2 doses.

Side effects
Possible side effects which patients taking Accupril (Quinapril) may notice include:

  • Cough
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Pain affecting the back or muscles
  • Itching or other symptoms of a mild skin reaction

Pain in the chest, fever, rapid changes in weight, high potassium levels and hoarseness are all examples of serious side effects that require medical care straight away. Other severe reactions may also be experienced by patients taking this drug.
