Uses
Ava 30 ED (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyloestradiol) is a combined oral contraceptive (often simply referred to as the pill) which works by affecting the hormones so as to prevent pregnancy. These tablets are made up of two separate synthetic female hormones, one of which is a progestogen (levonorgestrel) and the other one which is an oestrogen. When taken, this contraceptive medicine helps to prevent a matured egg that is ready to be fertilised from being released by the ovaries.

Other effects which further help to make pregnancy difficult include causing the cervical mucus to stay thick (which makes it harder for the sperm to enter the womb) and changing the lining of the womb so that the implantation of a fertilised egg is less likely. Use of combined oral contraceptives can also cause menstruation to occur less painfully and with lighter bleeding than normal.

Dosage and Administration
Each strip of Ava 30 ED (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyloestradiol) tablets contains 28 tablets, 21 of which are white. The white tablets are active and contain 0.15mg of levonorgestrel and 0.03mg of ethinylestradiol. In addition to this, 7 yellow tablets which do not contain hormones are provided. Doctors generally tell patients to take one tablet every day with water. There are clear markings on the package to indicate the correct day on which each tablet is to be taken.

Patients should follow the direction pointed out by the arrows on the pack until all of the tablets have been administered. Usually, a withdrawal bleed will be noticeable when the 7 yellow tablets are being taken. Doctors advise commencing the next strip the next day after the last pack has finished, so as to ensure that a new pack is always started out on the same day.
