Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Treating infections caused by bacteria Cefpodoxime, Potassium Clavulanate Clavpod 325

Uses
Clavpod 325 (Cefpodoxime/Potassium Clavulanate) is an antibiotic which is widely used to treat infections caused by gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It is also combined with potassium clavulanate, a type of beta lactamase inhibitor that is frequently used in combination with antibiotics, so as to help restore their effectiveness against types of bacteria which secrete an enzyme known as beta lactamase.

This enzyme allows the bacteria to become resistant to the activity of certain antibiotics and potassium clauvulanate helps prevent bacterial resistance. Cefpodoximine is a type of semi synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic of the third generation which has a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria.

When taken, it works by blocking the synthesis of bacteria cell walls, thereby leading to the destruction of the bacteria. Conditions which this medicine may be used for include abscesses, folliculitis, wounds which may have become infected, urinary tract infections, otitis media, lung infections and any other bacterial infection decided by your doctor.

Dosage and Administration
Clavpod 325 (Cefpodoxime/Potassium Clavulanate) is provided as tablets which contain 200mg of cefpodoxime, as well as 125mg of potassium clavulanate. Your doctor will need to be absolutely sure that your infection is caused by bacteria which are susceptible to this medicine before the commencement of treatment. Deciding the correct dosage will require taking into consideration such factors as the severity of the infection and the particular condition being treated.

Bronchitis may require a dosage which is different to cystitis, gonococcal infections or other conditions. The dosage frequently varies from patient to patient, and for this reason, it is essential that you carefully follow all instructions that your doctor gives you. When undergoing treatment with antibiotics, it is necessary to keep taking the medicine until you have finished the full course, unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop. Early cessation of treatment could result in the symptoms returning.

Side effects
Patients undergoing treatment for bacterial infections with Clavpod 325 (Cefpodoxime/Potassium Clavulanate) may notice some side effects, including:

  • Blocked nose
  • Muscular stiffness
  • Soreness in the back
  • Digestive disturbances
  • An unusual taste in the mouth

Although not all patients will experience side effects, it is important to be aware of the possibility. Tell your doctor about any reactions which concern you. Serious reactions are a less common occurrence. You must immediately seek medical treatment if you experience seizures, peeling of the skin, blisters, fever, bruises or any other serious reactions that have not been referenced in this paragraph.

Precautions
Treatment of infections which are viral is not one of the indications of this drug, as antibiotics only work against infections where bacteria is the cause.

There is a risk of bowel inflammation which may trigger bloody diarrhoea or other symptoms associated with the administration of broad spectrum antibiotics. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice severe diarrhoea.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Clavpod 325 (Cefpodoxime/Potassium Clavulanate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
