Treating dermatoses when milder treatments have proven unsuccessful Betamethasone Dipropionate Diprosone OV Cream

Uses
Diprosone OV Cream (Betamethasone Dipropionate) is a white cream that is used for its quick action in relieving itching and inflammation of the skin, as well as its vasoconstrictive effects. This makes it an effective treatment for severe dermatoses that are responsive to corticosteroids, including neurodermatitis, atopic eczema, nummular eczema, senile pruritis, and for the treatment and maintenance of chronic psoriasis.

The active component in this corticosteroid cream has been shown in tests to be more active than fluocortolone caproate, flumethasone pivalate, fluocinolone acetonide and betamethasone valerate. When treatment with mild corticosteroids fails to satisfactorily relieve the symptoms, use of a more potent medicated cream, such as this one, is often considered as the most effective form of treatment.

Dosage and Administration
Diprosone OV Cream (Betamethasone Dipropionate) is used for various conditions, and the most effective dosage regimen required will depend on what condition the patient needs to be treated for. This product is in the form of a cream (and not an ointment) and is considered to be most suitable for application to areas of skin which are moist (and not scaly, dry skin).

Treatment periods may last only a few days, however, longer use of the cream may be needed. Patients should not use the cream for more than 4 weeks unless told to do so by their doctor. Treatment is stopped when the symptoms of the skin condition have cleared.

Side effects
Use of potent topical corticosteroids such as Diprosone OV Cream (Betamethasone Dipropionate) to treat skin conditions can result in side effects, such as:

  • Prickly skin
  • Skin cracking
  • Perilesional scaling
  • The formation of vesicles
  • Redness affecting the skin

You must carefully monitor your skin for signs of any side effects, and report all reactions to your doctor. Some side effects are considered serious, and will even require medical treatment. If you do happen to suffer from a severe reaction, you must see your doctor immediately.

Precautions
This cream must not be used for acne, perioral dermatitis and any ulcerative conditions. There are other skin conditions not listed here that it may not be used for, and you are advised to ask your doctor before using it.

Use of this cream under occlusive dressings is not possible, as this can cause systemic absorption of the active ingredient, which could result in serious side effects.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Diprosone OV Cream (Betamethasone Dipropionate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
