Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Treating menopausal symptoms or oestrogen deficiency Oestradiol Estradot

Uses
Estradot (Oestradiol) transdermal oestrogen patches are used by women to treat menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, irritation and hot flashes. In some cases, women may use this product to prevent weakness of the bones (osteoporosis), which can occur during the menopause.

Treatment with these transdermal patches is referred to as HRT (hormone replacement therapy). This is because the active ingredient in these packages (oestradiol) is used to replace the depleting levels of oestrogen which occur as a result of the menopause. Because menopausal symptoms (such as vaginal dryness) are often caused by a low level of oestrogen, replacing this oestrogen can help to treat these symptoms, thereby providing relief from menopausal symptoms.

Dosage and Administration
Estradot (Oestradiol) comes in the form of transdermal patches, which must be applied directly to the skin. These patches continuously release oestradiol (sometimes called estradiol) into the blood at a steady rate, and are generally replaced twice per week. Patients are usually told to place the patch on a clean (and dry) area of skin on the abdomen. It should never be applied to the breasts.

After removing the patch from the sachet, it is placed on the application site, and pressed down for roughly 10 seconds, ensuring that it is firmly in place. Remember that doctors advise patients to rotate the application site. It is recommended to allow a break of at least 1 week before applying a patch to the same spot.

Side effects
Application of Estradot (Oestradiol) patches for hormone replacement therapy may cause some side effects in patients, such as:

  • Chloasma
  • Cramps in the legs
  • A discharge from the vagina
  • Menstrual bleeding or spotting
  • Skin reactions where the patch was applied

Other side effects may occur, such as gallbladder disease, peripheral oedema, blood clots, weight gain and an increase in blood pressure. If a serious reaction occurs, you must stop using this medicine and see your doctor immediately. Serious blood clots are also possible, and patients are advised to discuss the risk of this with their doctor.

Precautions
Women who have not already had a hysterectomy are normally told by their doctor to take a progestogen medicine (usually for the final 12 to 14 days of the menstrual cycle) alongside treatment with these patches. This is to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Hormone replaced therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer. Your doctor will need to determine whether or not the benefits of treatment with this medicine outweigh the risks before you can use these patches.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Estradot (Oestradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
