Flonida 1% Cream (Fluorouracil IP) is a topical treatment used for treating and managing skin cancer (superficial basal cell carcinoma) and pre-cancerous skin lesions. It is widely prescribed to treat actinic keratoses or solar keratoses (crusty patches of skin caused by excessive sunlight exposure). This cream is in a group of medications known as antimetabolites, and it works by preventing the growth of cancer cells, and eventually killing these cells.
Dosage and Administration
Flonida 1% Cream (Fluorouracil IP) is applied directly to the area of skin requiring treatment. However, you must see your doctor before using it, so that you can be told the correct amount to apply. Your doctor may tell you to apply it twice per day. Try to use it at the same time each day. Patients treating basal carcinoma are normally told to continue using it until all lesions have been treated. This takes at least 3 to 6 weeks, however in some cases 10 to 12 weeks of treatment may be required. Patients who are treating keratoses must use it until the lesions start to peel off, usually 2 to 4 weeks after commencing treatment. The lesions will normally be fully healed 1 to 2 months after finishing treatment with this cream.
If you apply Flonida 1% Cream (Fluorouracil IP) to the skin, there is a possibility of side effects occurring, such as:
- Skin irritation
- Redness or discolouration of the skin
- Itchiness at the application site
- Peeling or scaling of the skin
- A burning sensation affecting the skin
See your doctor straight away if any of the above mentioned side effects persist. There is a slight risk of more harmful side effects occurring. You must immediately consult your doctor if you notice severe stomach pain, fever, mouth sores, blood in your stools, vomiting or any other symptoms which are not mentioned here.
If you suffer from a specific type of enzyme deficiency known as dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD), you must inform your doctor before you begin treating yourself with this cream.
Use of this cream may increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Patients are advised to avoid tanning booths and unnecessary exposure to the sun. You may wish to apply sunscreen or wear long sleeved clothing while outdoors. However, after applying this cream, you must wait at least 2 hours before applying sunscreen.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Flonida 1% Cream (Fluorouracil IP) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
