Uses
Glucobay (Acarbose) is an antidiabetes medicine belonging to the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor class of drugs. Its mechanism of action involves slowing down the amount of glucose that the body takes in from the stomach. When taken, it acts inside the small intestine and blocks the action of the alpha glucosidases (enzymes which contribute to the hydrolyzation of trisaccharides and other complex carbohydrates into glucose).

The result of this is that the process in which carbohydrates are digested is slowed down, and the length of time it takes for sugar to be absorbed into the bloodstream is increased. Because of this, the control of postprandial hypoglycaemia (high blood sugar after meals) is possible, and this helps to bring about reduced HbA1c levels when blood tests are conducted to measure the blood sugar levels. Other benefits of this include reduced oxidative stress and a better response to insulin, which can further help protect against the possible health risks of diabetes.

Dosage and Administration
Glucobay (Acarbose) is provided in tablet form, and the medicine content of each one is 100mg. Adult patients who have been instructed by their doctor to take this medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes may be told to take 25mg by mouth, 3 times each day. For maintenance treatment, adjustments may be made, however the maintenance dosage normally ranges from 50mg to 100mg (also taken 3 times per day).

The tablet must be taken with food, otherwise it will not be effective at controlling the sugar levels after you finish a meal. Ensure that it is taken either right before you start eating or else with the first mouthful of food. Ask your doctor what to do in case you forget a dosage. Generally, patients are advised not to administer it in between meals, but to wait until the next dosage.

Side effects
During the course of treatment with Glucobay (Acarbose) tablets, it is possible that some side effects may occur, including:

  • Wind
  • Loose stools
  • Bloated feeling
  • A rumbling noise in the stomach
  • Diarrhoea which is mild in nature

It is essential that you tell your doctor how you feel at all times during treatment. This includes reporting all side effects that occur. It will be necessary to attend the hospital or visit your doctor immediately if you suffer from any serious side effects, including diarrhoea which contains blood, extreme pain in the stomach, persistent constipation or any other serious reactions that have not been mentioned in this paragraph.

Precautions
Due to the way in which this medicine works, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) is considered less common. However, it is still possible in some circumstances, especially if the medicine is used with other treatments. Discuss this with your doctor before beginning treatment.

Some of the requirements that doctors often request from patients during treatment include regular physical activity, glucose tests and dietary changes. Ensure that you follow all directions provided by your doctor.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Glucobay (Acarbose) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
