Uses
Imigran (Sumatriptan) is used to relieve migraine headaches. As well as treating headaches, it can also help to relieve other migraine symptoms, such as pain, light or sound sensitivity and nausea. This medicine is a painkiller, belonging to a class of medicines called selective serotonin receptor agonists (also known as triptans). It works by stimulating the serotonin receptors in the brain, thereby narrowing the blood vessels. As it is widely believed that migraines occur as a result of widened blood vessels, causing them to narrow helps to treat the symptoms. However, this medicine should not be used to prevent migraines.

Dosage and Administration
Imigran (Sumatriptan) tablets are usually taken at the onset of the migraine attack. Ask your doctor how much you should take, and always follow his or her instructions. You will also need to check with your doctor, to see whether or not this medicine is suitable for you. Adults are usually told to take one 50mg tablet when migraine symptoms are noticed. However, if the first dose fails to effectively relieve pain, your doctor may tell you to take another dose (2 hours after the first dose). The maximum dose is generally 300mg in any period of 24 hours.

Side effects
Possible side effects of Imigran (Sumatriptan) include:

  • Flushing
  • Vomiting
  • Nasal irritation
  • Cramps affecting the muscles
  • A tingling sensation under the skin

Tell your doctor about any side effects which occur. Rare but severe side effects may occur in some cases, and will require immediate medical attention. Some examples of this include severe pain affecting the stomach, lumps on the skin, visual disturbances, seizures and bloody diarrhoea. Other serious reactions which have not been mentioned here may also occur.

Precautions
If you suffer from Raynaud's disease (or any disorders related to blood circulation) or seizures, it is necessary to share this information with your doctor before taking this medicine.

If your migraine does not go away, or if it continues to occur on a daily basis, you should consult your doctor.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Imigran (Sumatriptan) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
