Uses
Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod) is a topical treatment which is useful for treating many conditions which affect the skin. It belongs to a group of medicines called immunomodulators. This cream is most commonly used as a topical treatment for genital warts. Genital and anal warts occur as a result of HPV (human papilloma virus). Topical application of this cream to the affected area increases the immune system's activity, and helps it to attack the virus, allowing the skin to heal.

Other conditions affecting the skin which this cream may be prescribe to treat include actinic keratoses (unusual skin growths caused by excessive exposure to the sun) and a certain type of skin cancer (called basal cell carcinoma).

Dosage and Administration
See your doctor before using Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod), so that you can be told how to properly apply it. Different application procedures are used, depending on the condition being treated. If you are treating genital warts, you may be told by your doctor to apply it 3 times per week, (usually on Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The cream is usually applied before going to bed, and allowed to remain on the affected area for 6 to 10 hours, after which it is washed clean. It is not used for longer than 16 weeks when treating genital warts.

Patients treating actinic keratoses are sometimes directed by their doctor to apply it twice per week (for example, Monday and Thursday or else Tuesday and Friday). Treatment generally lasts for 16 weeks. However, this treatment regimen may be different for some patients. Your doctor will tell you how and when to apply it. Superficial basal cell carcinoma is usually treated 5 times per week (from Monday to Friday), for a period which may last for 6 weeks.

Side effects
Topical application of Imiquad Cream (Imiquimod) may sometimes result in side effects, including:

  • Tiredness
  • Pain affecting the back
  • Blisters or cold sores
