Uses
Largactil (Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride) belongs to a class of antipsychotic medicines known as phenothiazines and is indicated in the treatment of psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia. It works by acting on the dopamine receptors in the brain. Other uses include treating tetanus, providing relief from persistent hiccups, treating vomiting and nausea, relieving pre surgical anxiety and treating acute intermittent porphyria. This medicine is said to exhibit sedative, antiemetic, anticholinergic, antiserotonin and antihistaminic properties.

Although the exact mechanism in which the benefits in the treatment of schizophrenia is not completely understood, it is believed by many experts that by inhibiting certain receptors in the brain it thereby reduces dopamine activity. This in turn helps to manage aggression, behavioural problems, hallucinations and other symptoms affecting patients with schizophrenia. Medical studies have been carried out to determine whether or not it has any benefits if used in the treatment of migraine.

Dosage and Administration
Largactil (Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride) tablets contain 100mg of the active ingredient. The dosage used for treating psychosis can differ to that required for mania, nausea, hiccups, porphyria or any other conditions. In many cases, each individual patient will need to have the dosage tailored to suit their individual needs. Adjustments based on the response to treatment may be required, and some patients treating psychosis may even need higher doses in order for their symptoms to be controlled. It is also possible that the doctor may reduce the dosage gradually to the lowest amount required to achieve maintenance effects.
