Uses
Metoral (Metolazone) is a water tablet belonging to the thiazide diuretic group of medicines. This drug is used to lower high blood pressure and to help remove excess fluid from the body, which may occur as a result of conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver, kidney failure and heart failure. Excess fluid retained in the body is referred to as oedema.

This medicine works on the kidneys, and causes them to increase the production of urine. Potassium and sodium are also filtered out of the blood and into the patient's urine. Removal of fluid from the blood leads to an overall decrease in the volume of fluid in the blood vessels, which causes a reduction in high blood pressure. Some conditions, such as heart failure, can cause a build up of fluid in the lungs and ankles. Treatment with this drug removes excess fluid which may accumulate in the body, thereby making it an effective treatment for oedema.

Dosage and Administration
Metoral (Metolazone) comes as tablets, which are taken by mouth. The exact number of tablets you need to take depends on your symptoms, and your doctor will decide how often you need to take it. Some patients prefer to take their dose in the morning, so that the medicine won't cause them to wake up during the night to urinate. Oedema is sometimes treated with 5mg taken once per day. High blood pressure may require a dosage of 2.5mg once a day. However, it is essential to note that the dosage guidelines given here are for information purposes only, and you will need to see your doctor for a medical examination in order to determine the correct dosage.
