Description

Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Reducing high blood pressure and treating angina Nifedipine, Atenolol Nilol

Uses
Nilol (Nifedipine/Atenolol) is a drug which contains two active ingredients, each of which has its own mode of action. This medicine is prescribed to patients whose blood pressure is too high, as part of a treatment plan to lower their high blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of serious illnesses. It is also widely prescribed to prevent angina (chest pain).

Atenol is a type of beta-blocker which acts on the beta receptors in the heart to make the heart beat slower, resulting in a reduction of blood pressure. Due to the heart beating slower, its demand for oxygen is reduced, which also helps to prevent chest pain. The other ingredient, Nifedipine, is a type of drug called a dihydropyridine. It helps to widen the blood vessels, thereby preventing chest pain and reducing blood pressure.

Dosage and Administration
Nilol (Nifedipine/Atenolol) tablets each contain 20mg of nifedipine and 50mg of atenolol. You will need to visit your doctor before it is possible to take this medication. This is so that your doctor can prescribe a safe and suitable dosage for you. Adults treating high blood pressure are sometimes directed to take it once per day. Angina is often treated with one tablet taken every 12 hours. However, it is very important to note that this is merely a guideline, and the actual dosage your doctor prescribes to you may differ.

Side effects
Some patients who take Nilol (Nifedipine/Atenolol) tablets may report side effects. Possible examples are listed here:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Migraine
  • Swelling of the arms and legs
  • Cold feeling in the feet and hands
  • Relaxation of the blood vessels leading to flushing

Any side effects experienced while undergoing treatment should be reported to the prescribing doctor. Serious side effects are possible, however, only a small number of patients report severe reactions. See your doctor immediately if you notice hallucinations, bronchospasms, loss of hair, thrombocytopenia, frequent urination or any other reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
Patients are advised not to suddenly stop taking this drug. This is especially important if the patient suffers from ischaemic heart disease. It may be necessary for the prescribing doctor to gradually decrease the dosage when treatment is being stopped.

This medicine is not meant to be used as a treatment for a sudden angina attack, as it is not fast working. Your doctor may prescribe other medications for you in case this occurs.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Nilol (Nifedipine/Atenolol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
