Hypertension, heart failure Prazosin Prazopress

Uses
Prazopress (Prazosin) is a versatile medicine with a wide range of medical uses. It is most commonly used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. However, in addition to these conditions, doctors may prescribe it to treat Raynaud's disease (a condition which causes the hands and feet to turn blue while also causing spasms), benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate gland, which leads to urination problems) and to help the body to pass kidney stones through urination.

This medicine belongs to the alpha blocker group of drugs, and it works by inhibiting the action of the alpha receptors in the body. This causes the muscles in the blood vessels to relax, thereby leading to a widening of these vessels. As a result of this, the blood may flow much more easily in the blood vessels, leading to a reduction in blood pressure. Heart failure is also treated because of this, as the heart requires less effort to pump blood around the body.

Dosage and Administration
Patients must visit their doctor before taking Prazopress (Prazosin) tablets, so that the correct dosage can be prescribed. Adults treating congestive heart failure, hypertension or benign prostatic hyperplasia may be prescribed an initial dose of 1mg (taken 2 to 3 times per day). The dosage may then be adjusted by the doctor, and it is possible that the patient will be told to take 6mg to 15mg per day, administered in divided doses. When the first dose of this drug is taken (or after the dose has been adjusted), the patient may feel dizzy. Patients are therefore advised to exercise caution when getting up from a seated position.

Side effects
When you visit your doctor for your pre-treatment medical assessment, you may wish to discuss the risk of the side effects associated with taking Prazopress (Prazosin) tablets. A list of possible reactions is provided here:

  • Vertigo
  • Impotence
  • Blurred vision
  • Nasal congestion
  • Increased urination

You are advised to report side effects to your doctor as soon as possible, especially if they persist or become serious. In rare cases, severe reactions may occur, and if this happens, immediate medical care is necessary. Examples of this include a persistent and painful erection, fluid retention causing swelling in the limbs and changes in mood. This list of reactions is not complete, and other side effects may also occur.

Precautions
Patients who suffer from (or have ever been affected by) narcolepsy, cancer of the prostate, or liver disease must tell their doctor about their condition before taking this drug.

Regular monitoring of your blood pressure will be required while taking this drug.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Prazopress (Prazosin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
