Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Treating anal fissures Glyceryl Trinitrate Rectogesic Ointment

Uses
Rectogesic Ointment (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is used to treat a fissure (tear) that occurs in the anus. Fissures are sometimes caused by constipation or increased muscular tension in the anal sphincter. Spasms of the anal sphincter can also inhibit the healing of the fissure. When applied directly to the inside of the anus, this ointment help to cause the release of nitric oxide, which in turn leads to a relaxing of the blood vessels and the sphincter, thereby contributing to a reduction in pain while also helping the fissure to heal.

Dosage and Administration
Your doctor will instruct you on how to properly apply Rectogesic Ointment (Glyceryl Trinitrate) to the inside of the anus. Patients may be told to wear gloves when applying the ointment, or to wash the hands after application so as to lessen the chances of the active ingredient being absorbed through the skin (which could lead to side effects). Doctors generally instruct patients to continue treatment until the pain has subsided, however, the maximum period of time for which this ointment is used is usually 8 weeks.
