Vigamed (Phentolamine Mesylate) helps adult men with erectile dysfunction to achieve an erection. It acts on the alpha receptors present in the erectile tissue of the penis. When combined with sexual stimulation, it can help men affected by impotence to achieve an erection which is sufficient to engage in sexual intercourse. The active ingredient in this medicine belongs to a class of drugs referred to as adrenergic receptor antagonists.
When administered, it helps to cause a blockade of the alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. This in turn has a vasodilative effect (meaning that it widens the blood vessels), thereby helping men to achieve an erection. It has been suggested that this could be due to it blocking adrenergic activity that can cause reduced blood flow to the penis.
