Uses
Zyban (Bupropion Hydrochloride) is primarily used to help people stop smoking. Treatment with this drug is different from nicotine replacement therapy. Medical experts believe it works by increasing the quantity of neurotransmitters (dopamine and noradrenaline) in the brain. When used in combination with motivational support and therapy, it can help to reduce cravings for cigarettes, and can also increase the chances of success in patients who wish to quit smoking. The active ingredient in this medication has also been used to treat seasonal affective disorder and depression.

Dosage and Administration
Zyban (Bupropion Hydrochloride) comes as tablets. You must strictly follow the instructions provided by your doctor. Treatment generally commences while the patient is still smoking, as roughly 1 week of taking the drug is required in order to achieve a satisfactory level of the active ingredient in the blood. A date should be selected by the patient on which to quit smoking, usually during the second week of treatment.

Most patients are told to take a dose of 150mg for the first 3 days, after which the prescribing doctor may recommend an increase to 300mg per day, taken in 2 divided doses. There should be an 8 hour interval in between each dose. In most cases, treatment beyond 7 to 12 weeks is not recommended. If no progress has been made, the patient may be told to discontinue taking the medication. Treatment beyond 12 weeks in patients who have successfully quit may be considered by the doctor, as in some cases, maintenance therapy lasting for as long as 6 months has been effective.
