Acitrom

Uses
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) is a type of drug referred to as an anticoagulant (blood thinner) and it is indicated for the treatment and management of blood clots. This medicine will not rid the veins of a blood clot after formation but it can prevent enlargement of the clot, thereby reducing the risk of further complications. It acts as an antagonist of vitamin K (considered very important for blood coagulation). Medical experts suspect that it may work by affecting vitamin K epoxide reductase. Conditions treated include deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, ischemic attack and other disorders which have not been listed here.

Dosage and Administration
Acitrom (Nicoumalone) comes as 1mg tablets for oral administration. This medicine needs to be used with extreme caution in order to prevent serious side effects, and your doctor will monitor you before, during and after treatment. In all cases, determining the dosage will be the responsibility of your doctor. The dosage can vary based on individual circumstances. Blood tests will be required regularly to find out the rate at which your blood clots, and your doctor can then decide if any adjustments to the dosage are needed. Adults are sometimes directed to take it as a single dose each day alongside a glass of water. Never exceed the recommended dosage.

Side effects
Treatment with Acitrom (Nicoumalone) may cause side effects, such as:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Nosebleeds
• Digestive disorders
• Dermatological reactions

You will need to report any reactions that occur to your doctor. Although it is less likely that any serious reactions will occur, patients should note that this is still possible. Seek medical treatment immediately if you notice hair loss, fever, poor appetite, blood vessel inflammation, bruising or any other serious side effects.

Precautions
Cranberry juice should not be consumed during treatment as doing so could affect the medicine levels.

This medicine may make you bleed more than normal. Inform any doctors that treat you that you are taking it.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Acitrom (Nicoumalone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
