Uses
Amirol (Amitriptyline) is an antidepressant drug which has been prescribed to treat many patients for symptoms of depression. It can also function as a sedative. This drug works by inhibiting the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, which is believed to be the key to its mode of action in treating depression. Doctors may sometimes prescribe it to patients affected by other conditions, to treat their symptoms.

Dosage and Administration
Amirol (Amitriptyline) comes as 10mg tablets. When providing medical treatment to patients, doctors usually begin treatment at a low dosage, after which the dosage is gradually increased, based on the patient's response to treatment. It is important that patients only take the amount of the drug that they have been prescribed. In the majority of cases, the sedative effects of the drug are quickly noticed. Antidepressant effects may occur after 3 to 4 days of treatment, or in some cases, it may take as long as 30 days before a satisfactory response occurs.

Side effects
Patients who are taking Amirol (Amitriptyline) might sometimes experience side effects, such as:

  • Sweating
  • Hair loss
  • Mydriasis

  • Changes in body weight

This list of side effects is not complete, and other reactions are also possible. Examples of other side effects include impotence, changes in blood sugar levels, oedema, anorexia and vomiting. If any serious side effects occur, you must immediately seek medical treatment.
