Treating glaucoma Levobunolol Hydrochloride Betagan Eye Drops

Uses
Betagan Eye Drops (Levobunolol Hydrochloride) are prescribed to patients affected by open angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension or other diseases affecting the eyes. This ophthalmic solution has been proven to reduce intraocular pressure (pressure occurring in the eye), a serious condition which can cause vision loss.

This medicine belongs to a class of drugs referred to as beta blockers, and when used, it acts on the ciliary body (a part of the eye that produces a type of liquid called aqueous humour, which can build up inside the eye and cause eye pressure). As a result of the ciliary body being blocked, the amount of aqueous humour released into the eye is reduced, which in turn helps to reduce pressure in the eye.

Dosage and Administration
Betagan Eye Drops (Levobunolol Hydrochloride) need to be used exactly as instructed by your doctor. Adults are sometimes told by the doctor providing treatment to apply 1 to 2 drops of the ophthalmic solution to the eye or eyes that are affected once per day. Patients with severe glaucoma may be told to use it twice per day. Never exceed the dosage that your doctor tells you to administer.

Side effects
Side effects of Betagan Eye Drops (Levobunolol Hydrochloride) can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Unclear vision
  • Swelling or puffiness of the eyes
  • Burning or itchiness affecting the eyes

While you are undergoing treatment with these eye drops, tell your doctor about any side effects that occur. Serious reactions which will require medical attention straight away include severe eye pain, crusting or oozing from the eyelids, breathlessness and other possible severe side effects that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
These eye drops are only to be used in the eye, and should never be ingested or applied to any other part of the body.

If your vision becomes blurred after administering the eye drops, you must not drive until your vision returns to normal.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Betagan Eye Drops (Levobunolol Hydrochloride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
