Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
HIV infection Lamivudine Lamivir

Uses
Lamivir (Lamivudine) is in the nRTI (nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor) class of antiviral agents. It works by blocking HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. When used for HIV treatment, it is normally combined with other anti-retroviral drugs so as to achieve the maximum effects. After the HIV virus infects the body, it attacks the blood cells needed by the immune system to defend the body against infections, in particular the CD-4 T-helper cells. Upon entering these cells, it replicates itself by copying its DNA material so that it can spread in the body.

This process is referred to as HIV-DNA synthesis, and is an essential stage in the replication process of the virus. However, this medicine helps to interfere with this process by interfering with the enzyme needed by the virus to replicate itself (called HIV reverse transcriptase). As a result of this, the HIV DNA chain elongation is terminated and the virus is prevented from multiplying. Treatment with this medicine helps to reduce the viral load and slow down the progression of the virus and combination therapy with other anti-retroviral medicines can prevent viral resistance from developing.

Dosage and Administration
Lamivir (Lamivudine) film coated tablets each contain 150mg of the active ingredient. Your doctor will calculate a suitable daily dosage and will also determine which other medications you need to take so as to control your infection. In general, the daily dosage for HIV infections is 150mg taken twice per day or else 300mg once per day. Listen carefully to the instructions provided by your doctor and remember to take each dosage regularly without interruption. This will help to ensure that your symptoms are kept under control.

Side effects
Patients who undergo treatment with Lamivir (Lamivudine) should be aware of the fact that some side effects may be possible, which may include:

  • Insomnia
  • Poor appetite

Precautions
There have been rare reports of lactic acidosis or severe hepatomegaly occurring with steatosis in patients treated with nucleoside analogues. These are serious side effects which will require immediate medical attention.

Take extra special care not to infect others with the virus, because even though this medicine can help manage the infection, it will not stop the spread of the virus to others via sexual contact or any other methods of transmission.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
