Uses
Yasmin Oral Contraceptive (Drospirenone/Ethinylestradiol) is a hormonal contraceptive pill. When taken, it can help to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation. It also makes it difficult for a sperm to fertilise an egg. The main ingredients in this oral contraceptive pill are both synthesized versions of female sex hormones. In some cases, doctors may prescribe this medicine for women who are suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding.

Dosage and Administration
Yasmin Oral Contraceptive (Drospirenone/Ethinylestradiol) tablets must be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Patients are generally instructed to start taking it on the first day of their period, or else on the first Sunday after the commencement of their period. Usually, doctors instruct patients to take one tablet per day, for a period of 21 days. After this, there is a 7 day period in which no tablets are taken, and when this 7 day period is over, the patient may recommence taking the tablets.

Side effects
Taking Yasmin Oral Contraceptive (Drospirenone/Ethinylestradiol) might result in side effects, such as:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Darker skin on the face
  • Swelling of the breasts
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

You are advised to tell your doctor about any side effects which occur. Seek medical care straight away if you notice a lump on the breasts, depression, swelling in the legs or any other serious side effects.

Precautions
Taking contraceptive medication will not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and patients are advised that the use of a condom is necessary in order to prevent this.

If you suffer from diarrhoea which is severe in nature for a period of time longer than 24 hours, it may reduce the effectiveness of this pill. Ask your doctor what to do if this happens.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Yasmin Oral Contraceptive (Drospirenone/Ethinylestradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
