Aldara Topical Cream

Uses
Aldara Topical Cream (Imiquimod) treats actinic keratosis, genital warts and superficial basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) by stimulating an immune system response. It is recommended for use in immunocompetent patients (meaning that the immune system is functioning properly).

Forms of actinic keratosis that are treated include nonhypertrophic and nonhyperkeratotic AK that affects the scalp. In cases of primary superficial basal cell carcinoma affecting adults, diagnosis of the condition by means of a biopsy is usually needed by the doctor. Other skin cancers which patients have used it for include malignant melanomas and squamous cell carcinoma.

It is also widely used as a topical treatment for genital warts (however it will not cure the virus that causes these warts to appear), condyloma acuminate and perianal warts. The active ingredient in this cream is a nucleoside analogue and it is often referred to as a toll-like receptor-7 agonist. It enhances the response of the immune system by stimulating the cells required to fight the infection or abnormal skin cells.

Dosage and Administration
Patients should note that the area requiring treatment with Aldara Topical Cream (Imiquimod) needs to be fully washed using a mild soap and water before application. It must be fully dry before you rub the cream on. Doctors normally instruct patients to apply it before going to sleep and to ensure that it stays on the skin for 8 hours. Do not shower or wash during this period, however after the treatment period is over, the treated area may be washed again with water and soap. Your doctor will tell you how often to apply it as well as the duration of treatment.

Side effects
Aldara Topical Cream (Imiquimod) could trigger some side effects, including:

• Headache
• Redness on the skin
• Dermatological flaking
• Mildly sore or tender skin
• Skin colour changes at the area of treatment

All patients should be aware of the necessity to report any side effects experienced during the course of treatment with this cream. Some reactions are serious and will warrant immediate medical care. Examples include severe redness of the skin, bloody urine, stiff joints, sores which do not heal, pain in the abdomen and other severe reactions that have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
This cream is for topical use only and must never be ingested.

Patients are advised to wash their hands both before and after use of this medicated cream.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Aldara Topical Cream (Imiquimod) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
• If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
• If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
