Uses
Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) is a beta lactam antibiotic which has bactericidal action against both gram positive and negative microorganisms. Many widespread and commonly occurring bacterial infections can be treated by this medicine, including acute bronchitis, pneumonia, various other lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, otitis medica (middle ear infection), urinary tract infections, Lyme disease, sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea) as well as others not listed here.
It is also given to patients undergoing surgical or dental procedures to prevent bacterial endocarditis. The main ingredient in this medicine belongs to the aminopenicillin family, and it acts on susceptible bacteria by inhibiting cell wall formation. Resulting from this, the bacteria are seriously damaged and eventually eliminated, allowing for the infection to be treated. Its active ingredient is also commonly referred to as amoxicillin.
Dosage and Administration
Apo-Amoxi (Amoxycillin) is provided as 500mg capsules which are taken by mouth. It is possible that adult patients treating lower respiratory tract infections will be told to take 500mg (equal to a single capsule) every 8 hours. Other infections may require a different dosage regimen. Recurrent respiratory tract infections may require a high dosage. In addition to this, the dosage for patients undergoing a dental procedure who are taking this medicine for the prophylaxis of endocarditis is also considerably higher. Therefore, in all cases, it is essential to listen carefully to your doctor and to only take the amount that you are instructed to take.
