Treating chest pain and reducing high blood pressure Atenolol Atenolol

Uses
Atenolol (Atenolol) is a medicine which is indicated for the treatment of angina and high blood pressure. In addition to this, it is often prescribed for treating arrhythmias. When taken, this medicine (belonging to a group of drugs called beta blockers) restricts the action of beta receptors in the heart. As a result of this, the heart beats slower and with less force. This leads to a drop in blood pressure, while at the same time reducing the amount of oxygen required by the heart. Decreasing the heart's need for oxygen helps to prevent angina attacks.

Dosage and Administration
Atenolol (Atenolol) tablets are taken orally. However, before treatment can begin, it is essential that you go and see your doctor for a medical assessment. This will ensure that an optimum and safe dosage can be prescribed. Generally speaking, most patients will be told to take 50mg once per day. 1 to 2 weeks of treatment will be required for the medicine to take full effect. However, if a satisfactory response is not achieved, your doctor may tell you to take 100mg per day.

The recommended dosage for angina varies slightly, and patients are usually directed to take an initial dose of 50mg per day, which may be increased to 100mg by the prescribing doctor if an optimal response is not achieved after 1 week of treatment. However, certain patients may require 200mg per day.

Side effects
Treating any illness with pharmaceutical medicines can cause side effects, and Atenolol (Atenolol) is no exception. Some side effects which may be noticed by patients taking this drug include:

  • Impotence
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • A decrease in libido
  • Feeling anxious or nervous

Although severe side effects are less likely, it is still necessary to be aware that they may occur. See your doctor immediately if you notice intermittent claudication (leg cramps), Raynaud's syndrome, loss of hair, depression, fainting or any other severe reactions.

Precautions
When prescribing this medication, your doctor will most likely tell you not to discontinue treatment without first seeking medical advice. A sudden cessation of treatment can sometimes result in a worsening of symptoms, and may even cause chest pain or a heart attack. Patients stopping treatment are normally told to gradually reduce their dosage over a period of 1 to 2 weeks.

Patients who are prone to allergic reactions must be aware that this drug may cause their reactions to be worse. In some cases, the reaction may be so severe that it will not respond to a shot of adrenaline. If this applies to you, you are strongly advised to discuss the risks of taking this medication with your doctor before commencing treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Atenolol (Atenolol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you suffer from any allergies.
