Carnitene (L-Carnitine) is used for many different purposes. Its active ingredient is a type of amino acid, which is naturally produced by the body, and is important for helping the body to properly use energy. This medicine is used for patients with a levocarnitine deficiency caused by metabolism problems. Doctors also prescribe it to patients undergoing dialysis, to replace levocarnitine which has been removed from the body as a result of this type of treatment. Treating DCD (dialysis-related carnitine deficiency) helps to prevent weakness and low blood pressure.

Much medical research has been conducted to explore the potential benefits of this medicine in treating other conditions. Many men believe it to be effective in improving male fertility, and that taking it improves the quality of their sperm. Some men suspect that it may be useful for treating erectile dysfunction. It has also been the subject of much discussion regarding its use for weight loss. Other conditions which patients have used it for include an overactive thyroid, preventing side effects of valproic acid, preventing fatigue caused by chemotherapy as well as various other conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Carnitene (L-Carnitine) is injected by a doctor. Patients should not administer it themselves, as this could be dangerous. The dosage required will be determined by the prescribing doctor, based on the condition being treated and the patient's body weight. Treatment of patients on haemodialysis sometimes requires a dose of 10mg to 20mg per kilogram of body weight, which is given as a bolus injection, over a period of 2 to 3 minutes.
