Uses
Ciplactin (Cyproheptadine) belongs to a class of medicines referred to as first generation antihistamines. Its main mode of action involves inhibiting the ability of histamine from binding to the H1 receptors, thereby blocking its action. As histamine is responsible for causing allergy symptoms, blocking its effects can relieve symptoms such as sneezing, a blocked nose, watering of the eyes and itchy or red eyes. It is widely used for hay fever, allergies to pets, urticaria, angioneurotic oedema, eczema and other related conditions.

This medicine can also inhibit serotonin activity in the brain, which may be how it works for migraine. A medical study showed that it may be able to reduce the frequency or severity of migraine attacks. It has also been used for serotonin syndrome. Some researchers believe it may benefit men who experienced sexual dysfunction as a result of taking serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs, a type of medicine). This medicine has also been researched for potential use as an appetite stimulant in underweight patients affected by malnutrition, anorexia or other eating disorders. When administered alongside sufficient calories, it may help with weight gain. Some people have taken it for schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder, akathisia and other conditions not listed here.

Dosage and Administration
Ciplactin (Cyproheptadine) is provided as tablets, and the medicine content of each tablet is 4mg. Patients treating allergic rhinitis, pruritis or urticaria may be told by their doctor to begin treatment with an initial dosage of 4mg, administered 3 times per day. Maintenance treatment may require an adjustment of this dosage, however you should never increase your daily dosage unless your doctor tells you to.

Adults undergoing treatment for anorexia nervosa may be told to begin with an initial dosage of 2mg, taken 4 times per day. The doctor providing treatment may then decide to increase this to 8mg, administered 4 times per day. This adjustment usually takes place over a period of 3 weeks. Cushing's syndrome, cluster headaches, migraine and other conditions may require a different dosage. In all cases, you must only take the amount of medicine that your doctor tells you to take.
