Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Vaginal dryness, hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms Estradiol Climara 50

Uses
Climara 50 (Estradiol) patches are applied to the skin, and work by providing a continuous release of estradiol through the skin. This hormone is important for regulating many different functions in the female body. Menopausal symptoms, such as itching, burning or dryness around the vagina, as well as unpleasant feelings of warmth in the face, neck and chest, can occur due to a drop in oestrogen levels.

This medicine is used to relieve these symptoms, and it achieves this by replacing the oestrogen which is not being produced by the body. In some cases, these medicated patches may be used to help lower the risk of osteoporosis, and may also be prescribed to treat young women whose ovaries do not produce a sufficient volume of oestrogen.

Dosage and Administration
Climara 50 (Estradiol) patches are applied to the skin. In most cases, the patch is worn for a week (7 days), after which it is changed. Your doctor will probably start you out on the lowest strength patch, and if necessary, will direct you to use a patch which contains more of the active ingredient. The sticky side of the patch should be applied to the stomach (below the belly button), or else to the top of the buttocks. Do not apply it to the breasts. Remember, the patch should never be applied to damaged or irritated skin, and patients should also rotate the application site. This means that you must not apply the patch to the same spot for two consecutive weeks.

Side effects
Climara 50 (Estradiol) may cause:

  • Hair loss
  • Sinus pain
  • Pain in the breasts
  • Cramps or bloating affecting the stomach
  • Acne or changes to the colour of the skin on the face

Tell your doctor if any side effects occur. You will need to immediately seek medical attention if you notice lumps on the breasts, shortness of breath, sore legs, severe headaches, changes in vision or any other signs that you are suffering from a serious reaction.

Precautions
Regular medical check-ups and medical assessments will be required during the course of treatment. Your doctor will regularly assess whether or not treatment with these patches is suitable for you.

Your doctor will most likely tell you to have a mammogram and breast interval every year, or else more frequently.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Climara 50 (Estradiol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
