Fosamax (Alendronate) is a bisphosphonate which is prescribed to men or women as a treatment for osteoporosis, to prevent bone fractures. It may also be used to prevent this condition in patients who are undergoing treatment with corticosteroids, and as a treatment for Paget's disease. Treatment with this drug helps to stop the bone from being broken down, and can also increase the thickness of the bones.

Dosage and Administration
Fosamax (Alendronate) comes as tablets. All patients must see their doctor before starting treatment, so that the proper dosage can be prescribed. Adults taking this medicine for osteoporosis are usually told to take one 70mg tablet per week (as this drug is intended for use as a once weekly treatment). Other conditions may require different dosage regimens, and in all cases, patients must follow the instructions given to them by their doctor.

Side effects
Patients taking Fosamax (Alendronate) may sometimes experience side effects, such as:

  • Bloating
  • Stomach pain
