Fluid retention and high blood pressure Frusemide Frusenex 100

Uses
Frusenex 100 (Frusemide) is a diuretic derived from anthranilic acid which treats fluid retention (oedema) and high blood pressure by limiting salt absorption. It is sometimes spelled furosemide. Indications for this medicine include oedema (fluid retention) caused by hepatic cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome and congestive heart failure. High blood pressure has also been treated with it, and it may be used on its own or alongside other medicines for this condition.

This medicine's mechanism of action involves inhibiting the action of NKCC2, a type of membrane transport protein. As a result of this, a diuretic effect is produced (meaning that urine production is increased). This in turn helps the kidneys to remove salt from the blood and release it in the urine. An increased amount of water will also be removed from the blood and passed out by the body as urine.

Patients with heart failure may suffer from a build up of fluid in the ankles, or in some cases, a serious condition called pulmonary oedema in which fluid accumulates in the lungs. This occurs due to the heart pumping at a reduced rate of effectiveness. By removing this fluid, it helps to relieve these symptoms. Doctors believe that its hypotensive properties are due to the reduced plasma volume, and it is also said to have renal vasodilative properties.

Dosage and Administration
Frusenex 100 (Frusemide) tablets each contain 100mg of the active ingredient. Your doctor will calculate a dosage regimen for you based on the results of a medical evaluation. Generally, the dosage for adults treating oedema, hypertension, congestive heart failure, renal failure or oliguria ranges from 20mg to 80mg each day. Incremental adjustments may be ordered by the doctor, however this will depend on the clinical response of the patient.

Some patients taking higher amounts may be told by their doctor to administer it as divided doses. When taken, this medicine starts to work quickly, (sometimes within 30 minutes). The peak effects generally occur 2 hours after administration, and the overall length of time for which it is active is normally 4 to 5 hours. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor.

Side effects

Precautions
