Uses
Furoxone (Furazolidone) is effective against protozoa (tiny organisms which can cause infections) as well as gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Conditions treated with this medicine include colitis, cholera, traveller's diarrhoea, bacteremic salmonellosis and giardiasis. Certain medical experts have also proposed using it as a treatment for infections caused by helicobacter pylori.

Dosage and Administration
Furoxone (Furazolidone) 100mg tablets need to be taken exactly as instructed by your doctor. Adults treating diarrhoea or cholera occurring as a result of bacteria may be directed to take 100mg, 4 times per day, with treatment lasting for 5 to 7 days. If the patient is being treated for giardiasis, it is possible that the prescribing doctor will tell the patient to take 100mg, 4 times per day, and the period of treatment may last for 7 to 10 days. All patients must consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

Side effects
Patients who take Furoxone (Furazolidone) may experience side effects, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Loose stools
  • Brown or dark yellow coloured urine
  • Pain affecting the stomach or abdomen

It is important that you tell your doctor about any side effects which occur, especially if they become bothersome. In rare cases, side effects which are severe and require immediate medical attention can occur. See your doctor immediately if you notice pain in the joints, fever, itchiness or any other signs of a serious reaction.

Precautions
There is a long list of foods which can cause serious side effects if eaten while undergoing treatment with this drug (such as foods with a high level of tyramine). Ask your doctor about which foods are safe to eat and which foods you should avoid before you start taking this medicine.

It is also important to note that for at least 2 weeks after you stop treatment with this medicine, you will not be able to eat any of the foods your doctor has told you to avoid.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Furoxone (Furazolidone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
