Uses
Glizide (Gliclazide) is a medicine used to treat type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes is a result of insufficient insulin the body. Insulin is needed to break down sugar in the blood and a lack of insulin will cause increased levels of blood sugers. Glicazide works by increasing the amount of insulin created by the body.

Dosage and Administration
Your doctor will need to test your blood sugar levels before working out a starting dosage. You will also need regular blood tests throughout the course of treatment to make sure the gliclazide is keeping blood sugar levels at an acceptable level. Your dosage may be altered up or down accordingly.

Side effects
Glizide (Gliclazide) is a well-tolerated drug by most people.

If you experience any of these side effects, contact your doctor immediately:

  • itching, skin rash or other skin conditions
  • bruising or bleeding more easily than normal
  • fever, chills or weakness

You may experience nausea, upset stomach or diarrhea as you adjust to Gliclazide. If it becomes troublesome or continues for an excessive length of time, you should contact your doctor.

Gliclazide may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in some patients. Hypoglycemia may present as excessive tiredness or drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, nervousness, shaking, increased sweating, increased hunger, tingling in the hands and feet, increased heart rate. Yuo can hep to avoid hypoglycemia by eating regular meals. If you do experience hypoglycemia, you can increase your blood sugar levels by drinking frui juice or sugary soft drinks, or by eating some candy. Signs or sypttoms of hypoglycemia while taking gliclazide should be reported to your doctor.

Precautions
Before taking any new drug, it is important that your doctor is aware of your medical history and any current medical issues including any medications and illnesses. Of particular importance for gliclazide, you will need to tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic or sensitive to sulphonylureas or sulphonamides or any other ingredients in gliclazide tablets
  • have suffered from or are at risk of hypoglycaemia due to dietary issues
  • are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • suffer from heart or circulatory problems
  • have any metabolic problems
  • have any kideny or liver problems
  • have type-1 diabetes
