Uses

Methimez (Methimazole) is oral medication used to treat hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid). It prevents the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone.

Dosage and Administration

Methmimez is a oral tablet form of Methimazole. It is taken by mouth. It can be taken with or without food. Methimazole is usually taken 1 to 3 times a day depending on the patient`s condition.

Your doctor will advise the optimal dosage for you, depending on your medical condition and how you respond to treatment. For children, dosage is also weight dependant.

Side effects

The most common side effects of Methimez (Methimazole) are:

  • stomach upset
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • mild rash / itching

Tell your doctor if these side effects continue for a prolonged period or if they worsen over the course of treatment.

Any serious side effects including allergic reactions (rash, itching / swelling - especially of the face / tongue / throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing) joint/muscle pain, numb / tingling skin, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, signs of liver problems (such as nausea or vomiting that doesn`t stop, yellowing eyes / skin, dark urine, severe stomach / abdominal pain), signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine, bloody urine) should be passed on to your doctor immediately.

In very rare situations, patients can develop blood disorders during the first few months of treatment including low numbers of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. If you notice any signs of infection, fever, persistent sore throat, easy bruising / bleeding or unusual tiredness tell your doctor right away.

Precautions

Before you take Methimez (Methimazole), tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have ever had blood disorders (such as agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia), liver disease, pancreatitis. Also make sure your doctor is aware of any medical allergies.

This medication is not recommended for use during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding if you are taking Methimez (Methimazole).

Tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, particularly if you are taking warfarin or digoxin.
