Uses
Vectavir (Penciclovir) is a cold sore cream. Its active ingredient is a type of antiviral medication, which is effective at treating cold sores occurring as a result of the herpes simplex virus. This cream prevents the virus from spreading and further infecting cells in the body, which helps to reduce pain, burning and itching associated with cold sores. It can also help the sores to heal more quickly.

Dosage and Administration
Vectavir (Penciclovir) cream works most effectively if treatment commences as soon as the first signs of a cold sore occur, however, it is also possible to start treatment after the blisters have formed. Consult your doctor before using it, so that you can be told how often to apply it, and how long treatment is required for. Adult are sometimes told to apply the cream to the area requiring treatment every 2 hours (while you are awake) for a period of 4 days. Enough cream should be used to cover all of the sores. See your doctor if your symptoms have not improved after 4 days.

Side effects
Application of Vectavir (Penciclovir) cold sore cream can sometimes cause a burning or stinging sensation at the application site. Some patients have also reported numbness. If you experience any signs of a severe reaction, you should immediately consult your doctor.

Precautions
Care should be taken to ensure that none of the cream cones into contact with the eyes, mouth, nose, ears or genitals.

In order to reduce the chances of spreading the infection, you should avoid unnecessary touching of the sores.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Vectavir (Penciclovir) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
