Uses
Zurig 80 (Febuxostat) is used as a gout treatment. This condition is caused by a build up of crystals made from uric acid occurring in the joints, which can trigger symptoms such as pain and inflammation. Treatment with this drug aims to treat and prevent gout flare ups of gout. It achieves this by causing a reduction of uric acid levels in the blood, as a result of inhibiting the action of xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for producing uric acid.

Dosage and Administration
Zurig 80 (Febuxostat) is usually prescribed as part of a long term management plan for gout, and treatment generally will not commence during a gout attack, due to the possibility of a worsening of the condition. In most cases, after a medical consultation, patients are instructed by their doctor to start out with an initial dosage consisting of 40mg, taken once per day. The maintenance dosage may be different, and usually ranges between 40mg and 80mg per day. Never take more than the amount your doctor tells you to take.

  • Painful, swollen or stiff joints

Side effects should be reported to the prescribing doctor. You must seek immediate medical care if you experience balance problems, visual disturbances, weakness in the limbs or any other signs that indicate you may be suffering from serious side effects.

Precautions
It can take a few months before this medicine starts to stop attacks of gout. During the initial few months of taking this medicine, there is a possibility that an increase in gout attacks may occur. Your doctor may prescribe other medications to treat this.

If you suffer from or have a history of Lesch-Nylan syndrome, liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, a stroke, cancer, chest pain or an organ transplant, you must tell your doctor before starting treatment with this medication.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
