Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Schizophrenia or bipolar disorder Olanzapine Zyprexa

Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is administered as a treatment for mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Its mechanism of action involves affecting serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Doctors may decide to treat patients by using this medicine on its own (monotherapy) or as a combination treatment. When used for bipolar disorder, it can help to relieve mixed or manic episodes, and it can also be used alongside other medicines for the treatment of depressive episodes caused by bipolar disorder.

Medical research has suggested that this medicine's efficacy in the treatment of schizophrenia may be related to the blocking of dopamine receptors, so as to reduce the abnormal dopamine activity and correct the disturbance in the neurotransmitters in the brain. This in turn may help to provide relief from symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and problems related to emotions. It is said to be effective at controlling both positive and negative schizophrenia symptoms. This medicine is categorized as an atypical antipsychotic.

Dosage and Administration
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is provided as 2.5mg strength tablets for administration by mouth. Your doctor will assess your condition in order to determine the correct daily dosage. Patients treating schizophrenia are sometimes directed by their doctor to start out with a dosage that can range from 5mg to 10mg per day. Maintenance treatment usually requires 10mg per day, however, the maximum dose is 20mg, taken once per day. It is important to note that the dosage often varies depending on individual circumstances and patients are required to follow all directions given by their doctor.

Side effects

  • Somnolence
  • Perspiration
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Appetite changes (increase or decrease)

Patients must inform their doctor of all side effects that occur. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a rare but serious side effect associated with this medicine. If you suffer from fever, stiff muscles, confusion or any other symptoms indicative of this reaction, you must seek medical attention straight away.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Zyprexa (Olanzapine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
