Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
High blood pressure Metoprolol Succinate Betaloc CR

Uses
Betaloc CR (Metoprolol Succinate) is mainly used for hypertension, angina or heart failure. It works by acting on the beta receptors and inhibiting them. Other uses include hyperthyroidism, the prevention of migraines, heart disorders which occur alongside palpitations, cardiac arrhythmias and as a maintenance treatment after the occurrence of a myocardial infarction.

This medicine is referred to as a selective beta receptor blocker (often abbreviated to beta blocker). Experts have theorized that its effects in the treatment of high blood pressure may be due to it reducing the heart rate. Because of this, the rate of pressure at which blood is pumped out of the heart is lessened, allowing for an overall decrease in blood pressure. Inhibiting the beta receptors also has an effect on the activity of adrenaline and noradrenaline, and this may explain its effects in the treatment of other conditions.

Dosage and Administration
Betaloc CR (Metoprolol Succinate) comes as controlled release tablets, each of which contains 23.75mg of the active ingredient. The tablets are provided in a memory pack with the days of the week clearly marked, so as to make it easy for you to keep track of which day each tablet needs to be taken on. In all cases, the doctor in charge of treatment will decide the required daily dosage. This medicine is generally administered as a once daily dosage.

However, the exact strength of tablet needed may vary for each individual depending on the exact condition needing treatment. Remember that tablets must not be chewed, as this will disrupt the special controlled release mechanism. Your doctor may gradually adjust your dosage in accordance with the response to treatment. In addition to this, patients should note that treatment will not be abruptly withdrawn, but rather, the doctor may gradually stop treatment over a continuous period of time.
