Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
High blood pressure and angina Metoprolol Tartrate Betaloc

Uses
Betaloc (Metoprolol Tartrate) is used to treat high blood pressure, to prevent the occurrence of angina (chest pain), to control arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), to increase the patient's chances of survival after a heart attack, and for migraine prophylaxis. It acts on the heart, and decreases the rate and force at which it beats, thereby reducing blood pressure and helping to prevent angina attacks occurring (especially if the patient is exercising).

Dosage and Administration
Betaloc (Metoprolol Tartrate) requires specific dosages to be taken, which must be carefully decided upon by the prescribing doctor, based upon the condition being treated, the patient's current and past health and many other factors. Control of angina is normally treated with 100mg taken 1 to 2 times per day, which may be adjusted. The dosage prescribed for hypertension is similar. It is essential that you do not suddenly stop taking this drug. If you wish to cease treatment, you must go to see your doctor to discuss gradual reduction of your dosage, which is required when stopping treatment.

Side effects
If you are being treated with Betaloc (Metoprolol Tartrate), remember that some side effects may occur. Some examples are listed here:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Impotence
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Feeling anxious or nervous

You will require immediate medical attention in the event that a serious reaction occurs. Serious (but uncommon reactions) include breathlessness, weight gain, hair loss, swelling of the hands or feet and a cold sensation in the feet and hands. Remember that this is not a complete list of possible reactions, and you will need to ask your doctor for further information.

Precautions
As mentioned above, you must never abruptly stop taking this drug. Doing so may not only cause your condition to worsen, but in some cases, may even cause a heart attack or other serious conditions. Your doctor will incrementally decrease you dosage over a period of 1 to 2 weeks before you can stop taking it.

Diabetic patients need to be aware that taking this medication may prevent a fast, pounding heartbeat from occurring when your blood sugar levels drop. However, other symptoms of low blood sugar are unaffected. It is also necessary to bear in mind that taking this drug can make it harder to control blood sugar levels for diabetic patients, and special instructions may be given to you by your doctor.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Betaloc (Metoprolol Tartrate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
