Hypothyroidism Levothyroxine Sodium Eltroxin

Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) is a synthesized version of a naturally occurring thyroid hormone which is used to compensate for insufficient hormone production due to hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland is responsible for the production of hormones which are needed for the regulation of metabolism. These hormones help to metabolise proteins and fats, and can also play a vital role in natural growth.

However, some patients may suffer from an endocrine disorder referred to as low thyroid or underactive thyroid, in which insufficient amounts of hormones are produced. This can lead to many symptoms, including puffiness of the face, weight gain, tiredness, high cholesterol, hair thinning, sensitivity to the cold and other symptoms.

Without treatment, the symptoms may worsen. By replacing the body's supply of thyroid hormone, this medicine can alleviate the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Patients have also taken it for the prevention or treatment of a goiter or for other conditions related to the thyroid.

Dosage and Administration
Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) is provided as tablets and the medicine content of each one is 50mcg. Careful calculation of the dosage will be needed by your doctor, and in general, patients need to start out on a low dosage which may be adjusted in gradual increments at the discretion of the doctor providing treatment. Patients are sometimes directed to take the medicine without food, 30 minutes prior to eating breakfast. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. During treatment, medical tests may be carried out by your doctor to check your levels of thyroid hormones. This will help determine if any adjustments to the dosage regimen are needed.

Side effects
Patients taking the synthetic thyroid hormone Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) may suffer from side effects, including:

  • Headache
  • Appetite changes
  • Cramping in the stomach
  • Feeling sensitive to the heat
  • Shaking which you cannot control

Tell your doctor if any side effects occur. Serious side effects will require you to immediately see your doctor or attend the hospital.

This medicine may not start to work instantly, and a certain period of time (usually several weeks) will need to elapse before your body fully responds to treatment.

Use of these tablets will not cure hypothyroidism, but will only help to control the symptoms.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Eltroxin (Levothyroxine Sodium) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
