Uses
Pentasa (Mesalazine) (also spelled mesalamine) is a medicine prescribed for ulcerative colitis and in some cases, it may be administered to stop ulcerative colitis symptoms from returning. Ulcerative colitis symptoms occur as a result of intestinal inflammation that affects the large intestine, causing bloody diarrhoea, pain and other symptoms. This medicine belongs to a group of medicines known as aminosalicylate, and it treats ulcerative colitis by decreasing inflammation of the intestines.
Dosage and Administration
Pentasa (Mesalazine) comes as prolonged release tablets which are taken exactly as instructed by the doctor that prescribed them. It is very important that the tablets are not crushed or chewed, as this may affect the prolonged release mechanism. The dosage instructions of the prescribing doctor must be strictly followed at all times, and patients should never exceed the recommended dosage.
