Anti-hypertensive agent Atenolol Tenormin

Uses
Tenormin (Atenolol) is a beta-adrenenergic receptor blocker which lowers high blood pressure in hypertensive patients by affecting the way in which the heart beats. This beta blocker medicine is absorbed from the body's gastrointestinal tract, and its effects have been shown to last up to 24 hours. It selectively inhibits the beta-1 receptors, which in turn has a significant inhibitory effect on noradrenaline and adrenaline.

They are prevented from acting on the heart, and because of this, the output of the heart as well as the blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) are reduced. When combined with cardiovascular risk reduction measures (such as exercise or a reduced fat and sodium intake), it can lower the blood pressure, thereby helping to lessen the risk of strokes and other serious cardiovascular events.

It is also considered for treatment in angina pectoris, as part of a long term treatment and control plan. It can lessen the hearts oxygen needs and block the action of chemicals called catecholamines. Doctors have also treated patients affected by other conditions with it, and in some cases, it has been used together with other antihypertensive medicines. Other potential clinical uses for which it has been studied include alcohol withdrawal, prevention of migraine and prophylaxis of oesophageal variceal haemorrhage.

Dosage and Administration
This particular variety of Tenormin (Atenolol) comes as 25mg strength tablets which are taken by means of oral administration. Doctors often direct adults undergoing treatment for hypertension to begin with 50mg per day. The dosage may be increased in the event that a satisfactory response is not achieved. In some cases, adults taking it for anxiety or migraine prophylaxis have been told to take 50mg per day. Other conditions, such as angina, may need a different dosage schedule and frequency of administration. Always comply with the instructions your doctor gives you.

Side effects
Possible reactions which could occur due to treatment with Tenormin (Atenolol) include:

  • Insomnia
  • Drowsy feeling
  • Appetite reduction
  • Dryness inside the mouth
  • Low libido or erectile problems

The list of side effects provided above is not complete, and there is a possibility that some reactions not mentioned may occur. Report any side effects, no matter how mild, to your doctor. Immediate treatment or examination from a doctor will be required if you are affected by behavioural changes, breathlessness, weight gain or any other severe reactions that have not been referenced in this paragraph.

Precautions
Sudden withdrawal of treatment could lead to exacerbation of symptoms in some patients, especially those with coronary artery disease. Patients may be told to gradually lower the dosage and to limit strenuous physical activity and exercise.

Your doctor may schedule regular medical checkups for you during the course of treatment, to monitor your blood pressure and assess the response to treatment.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Tenormin (Atenolol) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
