Uses
Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) is a heartburn medicine which relieves acid indigestion symptoms by reducing and controlling excess amounts of stomach acid. After administration, it targets and blocks the histamine H2 receptors on the gastric cells in the lining of the stomach. Resulting from this, the production of stomach acid ceases and the overall volume of gastric acid is decreased. Patients who suffer from a sour stomach and indigestion caused by certain foods (such as spicy food) and drinks can have their symptoms effectively relieved for up to 12 hours after taking it.

Dosage and Administration
If you are affected by indigestion and your doctor advises you to take Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) tablets, full details including when to take it and how much to take will be provided. Adults are sometimes told to take either 300mg (2 tablets) before bed or else 150mg twice per day (if taken in this way, it must be divided into two doses, one in the morning and another in the evening). However, because this medicine may be used for duodenal ulcers or other conditions, the amount needed may be different and you must always comply with the instructions your doctor gives you.

Side effects
Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) can trigger reactions, including:

  • Vertigo
  • Mood changes
  • Muscular irritation
  • Mild gastrointestinal problems
  • A discharge coming from the breasts

Treatment may not necessarily need to be stopped if the side effects listed above occur, however you will need to inform your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you get fever, eyesight disturbances, bruises on the skin or any other serious reactions not listed here.

Precautions
Your doctor may provide you with suggestions on how to reduce the occurrence of indigestion, including reducing alcohol and coffee consumption, quitting smoking, losing weight, eating at regular periods of time and staying away from fatty or other potentially irritant foods.

This medicine is not suitable for the treatment of patients who are affected by or have in the past suffered from porphyrias (a blood disorder).

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Zantac (Ranitidine Hydrochloride) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
